From Jean:

Most of the negatives stories are spread by the Peoples's press and by the USA gouvernement.
It is true that there is a drug cartels war in Mexico. And most of it occur on the border towns like Ciudad Juarez. I never stay long in the North. I always cross at Laredo and never had any problem.

I never, said NEVER had a bad experience in Mexico after 30 years of traveling in this nice country with so nice and welcoming peaples.

I thing that the keys are:

1- Speak a bit of Spanish
2- Smile
3- Be low profile
4- At the border, do your papers works early morning and drive South fast.
5- Try to skip the big touristics cities like Acapulco, PV, Cancun, Mexico City, etc...The bigsTourists Cities attracts the punks and thiefs.
6- Never show that you have more money than them...
and again, try to speak the language...

Good luck...and goMexico

Hey Juan,

The Michoacan coast is a beautiful place. A bit wild in many ways but absolutely beautiful. I believe that the Winter months or something like November until April are the most comfortable in terms of weather and rain is also minimal during this period as I recall. The surfing is apparently better in Summer though and I'm sure that any time of year could be a good time to visit.

I'm from the South Eastern U.S. (typically) but enjoy moving around and visting other places.

Thanks for the write-up. Very informative. My parents and I take a trip to Memphis every summer. We go to Graceland, Beale Street, the Sun Studio, and then to the blues clubs for the evening. Always a good time!

Hello Karla,

Congratulations on your engagement. I hope that you guys have a great visit.

Simply setting out to drive some of the 200 and to explore would be a great start. With a large group in tow exploring is sometimes a less fun, and a destination may be just what you need so that everyone can get out and stretch their legs. Maruata stands out in my memory as a great place to visit. There were many other nice beaches off all sorts too, from long, flat and empty to the short surfing beaches that were quite crowded. The eco tourism installation at La Manzinellera was also really nice as you can rent a casita on the beach and it is very scenic. As long as your group is flexible and o.k. with exploring you will be able to find a favorite of your own I'm sure.

Take Care,

Jonathan Poole
