Final push home

Neighborhood Walmart this one I had programed into my GPS and it took me around it three times and I did not recognise it as WALMART till I spotted the trailer behind the store with Walmart sign on it.Friday February 29 woke up really early 3 am decided to drive home.I stopped just north of St.Luis ,that made it a 1220km drive.

When I stopped for the night it was already snowing and the roads were slippery.This drive turned out to be a 16 hour marathon drive.Some sections of the road were covered in black ice and the ditches were littered with cars and trucks.

Got home OK ,but a little tired.

Midland to Abilene/Texas

texas-004.avi Just around noon as I was leaving Midland this wind started to pick up.In minutes the area was covered in dust.I have dust every where,as I write it is still blowing strong. As I was trying to take a picture of the dust storm my new camera was switched to video,so this is the result.

This road is not very well traveled.I did meet a group of bikers and the odd local driver in his pickup truck.It is an older road,but it is not pot holed.Just before the border the road climbs over a mountain where a river cutt’s a nice canyon trough the mountain.To bad my camera was broken.At the border the wait was about fifteen minutes.But because they are not so busy,there was five of them going over my van.On the US side the road is excellent.

Creel to Chihuahua

Our departure time was two pm,which was a little latter that I would have like to have left not knowing the road conditions a the terrain.Total drive was 286km ,first and last part of the drive was mountainous and the rest was fairly strait drive on a 6000ft high plateau.Road condition is good and we encountered more traffic than we were used to in the last few days.

Copper canyon/Creel

The drive from Mazatlan to Durango was the most scenic and most “curvas” drive that I have ever done.We reached altitudes of over 9200 ft.There is town of 4000 people up there.The road is in a good shape.From Durango to Parral easy drive after the drive a day before also a good road.Parral to Creel first part of the road is rough then good with a lot of turns.First night in Creel temp. was -6C day time 12-16C.We spend three days at Rekowata warm springs it’s a four and a half km walk from our campsite to the bottom of the canyon.Today Feb.21 we are driving to Chihuahua.

Today Ernst and I drove around Marina and Nuevo Vallarta.On Friday we are leaving,going to drive allong the coast to Mazatlan and then inland to Durango,Parral up to Creel.

Anyone heard from Cory and Ted?

This morning I have found hotel Frankfurt,but it’s been closed six months now.Cory and Ted were to stay there.I took my EV to VW dealer to have stick shift repaired,loose bushing.After a week there it could not be fixed.Oh well…It’s driveable just harder to find the right gear.

Today Jan.11 I’ve located Cory and Ted in PV RV park.It is walking distance from my place.Cory walked the beach close to the same time as me, but we did not run into each other.I went to a repair shop to see if the guy could fix my van and Corry went to the same place looking for some parts just after me and again we missed each other.

The drive to Puerto Vallarta took three hours.The closer I got to the city the worse the road got.From our campground there is no gas station for over 100km on hwy 200. It is more cloudy and cooler here.

Ernst and I are in the hotel zone,it’s actually nice here.Corry and Ted stayed behind just north of Playa Azul.The road north is just as hilly as hwy 37 from Zamora to Playa Azul where we reached elevation of over 7900 feet.We should meet up with the rest of the group probably today.

First picture is Playa Diamante just north of Playa Azul,second Hwy 200 north to Manzanillo,third VW campout in La Manzanilla.

Ernst and I are spending a few days in around lake Chapala.Today we payed a visit to town Chapala,not as nice as Zacatecas.Water level is up in the lake,but it is brown and weedy.There is heavy traffic on the single road.We should arrive in Zamora in couple of days.First picture is Jamay then Chapala and Ajijic.
