Leaving Mexico Behind

April 9th, 2009

Folks, the short story is we are now with April & Sal in Watsonville.  Got in here yesterday morning.  April is fine and looking BIG.  Baby is still due for the 24th ~ 30th depending on who is talking.  Their new house is great and we are happy to have a real bed again.  The full story of our travels since leaving San Carlos is below.

We left San Carlos early Thursday morning and headed up the Mex 200 – again.  Pleasant ride on good, mostly four lane road to Santa Ana where we would take the Mex 2 over to Sonoyta/Lukeville.  Coming into Santa Ana we encounter the largest military check point we have ever encountered.   They were stopping ALL the trucks and inspecting them one by one.  They had them all in the left lane with us and other vehicles in the right.  We drove by over 10 km of standing tuckers bumper to bumper before we got to the check point.  A couple questions and we went on our way but the truckers were gonna be there for a long time to come.  Okeydokey !  Through Santa Ana and on off up the Mex 2 which we were not sure of as it had been reported to be a two lane road from hell.  Well, no quite, it has now ALMOST ALL been converted to four lane Cuota with modern conveniences  ALL except the last 10 km into Sonoyta.  That part is still under construction and we’re in the gravel and dirt off and on until we get into Sonoyta.  Van is now covered in mud and yes we did manage to find the Immigration station out in the desert some few km’s before Sonoyta to turn in our vehicle permit and get our travel visas cancelled.  We DID get a receipt for the sticker.  And without the advice in the Church’s Mexican travel book we would have whizzed right on by as there is absolutely no indication we are to do this here out in the desert way before the boarder crossing.  No signs on our side of the road just on the side of the south bound vehicles !  ANYWAY, another Mexican anomaly, and we are then off into Sonoyta and our last stop for fuel, food, an whatever before crossing into the good ‘ol USA!  The actual boarder crossing is a few km’s up the road from Sonoyta out in the desert again.  Just the Mexican and American boarder folks hanging around checking for whatever.  We drive up and hand in our passports,  “where have you been ?”  ” Mexico”  “where in Mexico ?”  “All over, San Carlos last night”  “OK, go ahead” as he hands back our passports.  No other questions, no looking in the van and we are quite surprised and off we go bewildered !
Now we are back in the USA and right into the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument park.  Beautiful !  A few km’s up the road we find a campsite where we stay for the night and take some photos you’ll see below.  No, the cactus’s were not in bloom as had been reported.  Too bad as it could have been even more spectacular.
Saturday morning off we go through the desert landscape headed for Yuma, San Diego and eventually Oceanside.  One stop we mad along the way was to visit the Desert Tower high up on the 4200 foot pass over the rocky mountains.  A monument built in 1922 ~ 23 to commemorate the progress westward, see photo of the Plaque below plus other photos of the site.  Quite spectacular and well worth the visit just to speak with the current owners, a young fellow and his mom !  Up and over the mountain pass we go and then the long descent towards San Diego and the Pacific Coast again, have we not done this before ?  The miles wiz on by and soon realize will be in Oceanside by early evening.  We had made contact with our friends Mark & Ann by email form Yuma and they were expecting us when we called.  A nice bed in their spare room welcomed us after a good go round of story telling.  In the morning I made a call to a long lost cousin of mine, Gary and he was around.  He came over and we had a great visit withhim and his two new 6 month old Wimerauners.  He told us of a great Hot Rod and Custom Car Show in near by Del Mar so Mark, Rita & I went there for the afternoon.  Gary had other plans and Ann had to work.  What a spectacle, over 5000 weird and wonderful cars, see photos an links below.  On the way back to Oceanside we drove by the beaches which were full of Spring Breakers, and folks out enjoying one of the best spring days after a long cold winter ?  We were having a hard time imagining what all the fuss was about having just spent the last four months in Mexico !  Back to Mark & Ann’s for a wonderful diner and another good night in a real bed.
Sunday morning we meet up with Gary again for breakfast and then we’re off up the coast headed for Los Osos and a stop at Go Westy.  Along the way we stop in North Los Angeles and look up another long lost cousin of mine, Dale and his wife Linda and son Alex.  The phone call out of the blue surprised the hell out of him as he was home on lunch break.  A nice afternoon lunch with them, more photos and away we go.  After realizing we’re not quite gonna make Los Osos by nightfall we stop at Gaviota State Park Beach campground for the night.  Nice place by the ocean with a long pier.  But now it’s really getting cold !  We’re not ready for all this and we break out the cold weather gear.  In the morning off we go again getting into Los Osos just before noon and now it’s raining, first bad weather we’ve seen since Palenque !  Go Westy is quite impressive, there are VW vans everywhere, mostly Vanagons but a few Eurovans and Bays around too.  Meet up with Lucas and after a short chat of our adventures we pick up the BusFusion goody package they are sending with me and a have a chat about putting higher springs on our van which we may have done before coming home.  A stroll through their retail sales shop nets us a new plastic outdoor mat and consul for between the seats.
Back on the road in the rain towards Watsonville, we decide to take the Coast Highway as we should have plenty of time to get there before nightfall.  The Pacific Coast Highway is a beautiful scenic drive which we have done before but is always good.  Along the way the rain intensifies and getting into Big Sur and almost to Monterrey we encounter a problem !  The road is blocked, a mud slide caused by the rain and hail storm has stuck a car some 5 or 6 vehicles in front of us.  It’s pouring cats, dogs and elephants now and the road looks bad.  We hang around awhile but it doesn’t look good.  We finally opt to turn around and stop at the nearby gas bar restaurant and wait to see what happens.   A few hours later we’re told the road will not be opened until tomorrow and only after the bridge inspectors get there and certify the bridge that was hit by a falling tree.  Well, that’s just fine and dandy !  We decide to make our way back towards Los Osos, some 140 miles, and find the only road over the coastal mountain range some 30 miles before Los Osos.  By the time we get there it’s dark, raining and now foggy.  We make our way across the Hwy 46 mountain pass leading to Hwy 101.  We get there around 9 PM and opt to spent the night in a gas station parking lot.  Rain pounding on the roof all night and in the morning it has subsided and off we go again North on the 101 after some coffee and breakfast burritos from the service centre store.  Raining most of the way until nearing Watsonvillewhen it finally let up.  We find April & Sal at home waiting on our arrival.  A quick tour of their new house and then we’re off again on another adventure, PARACHUTING !   One of April’s friends, Sydney and her dad are here and have booked an 11 AM Parachute jump from the Marina skydiving school.  It will be their first jump and we want to go watch.  So, off we go again heading back down the Coastal Highway towards Monterrey but this time form the north side.  Marina is just before Monterrey so no problems.  We find our way to the airport and watch as Sydney and her father make their first jump.  Quite exciting for all !
So, now we’re here staying with April & Sal until the baby arrives.  Quite the adventure so far but for now we’re gonna just sit around and relax while Rita does more baby stuff shopping.  Sal & I are changing oil on our van and his car today, guy stuff !
    Enjoy the photos below !

More on the Sailing story & Travelling north

April 2nd, 2009

Folks, if you go to http://blissblogin.blogspot.com and scroll down to the entry of March 22  “Let’s do lunch — the hard way”  you will find an in-depth report with great photos of our sailing experience written up by Bliss who watched the entire episode from the deck of the sailboat.

We are now in San Carlos and met up with Jim & Bliss today.  Jim took us out to see his 50′ sailer that is a “work in progress”  he claims it will be ready for the water in two years.  Sure looked like a big project to me.  No photos as we did not have the camera with us.  The trip up from La Manz was uneventful, and we got Marianne to the airport on time.  Actually we got into PV around 9:30 so had time for a nice breakfast.  After we dropped her off at the airport we made a stop at he local Wal Mart then headed up the coast winding up in Sayulita by late afternoon.  Took a spot in the big campground at the North end of the beach and spent the rest of the day and evening cruising around Sayulita.  Packed with tourist and many surfers, more than we saw in Puerto Escondido.  In the morning we got off again and wound up in Mazatlan at the Del Mar camp for the night.  Only four campers in there.  A good diner was found sort of across the street at a large palapa restaurant.  All you can eat ribs for 99 pesos and 10 peso beers.  Great !  Off again in the morning winding up just a few km south of Obregon for the night in a very large Pemex with showers, laundry, Internet, lounge with billiards and big screen TV – WOW !  So this morning after visiting the Obregon Wal Mart we got back on the road and got into San Carlos around noon.  Had lunch and found Jim & Bliss.  So now we’re holed up in the Totonaka RV park with Internet and I’m typing away while Rita who’s not feeling too well, upset stomach, maybe from the lunch that was not cooked well, is up in bed snoozing.  In the morning we’re off again and maybe we get across the boarder tomorrow or Saturday.  We’re gonna try for the Sonoyta/Lukville crossing and go into the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument park.  One more note, we took the Cuota roads whenever and wherever possible and so far we have spent around $100 on tolls doing the trip up from La Manz !  There are slower free roads but we were in a hurry !

Sailing

March 26th, 2009

Folks, we finally made out on the high seas with Jim & Bliss in their 33′ sailboat.  Sunday around 11 am they came in from Blue Bay where they spent the night and anchored off the beach in front of our camp.  Jim came in with his dingy and that’s when the fun began.  Rita not liking the ocean very much was reluctant to come out with me and get aboard the dingy which was being held on the far side of the wave break by Jim.  I had already gone out and dropped off a load of stuff we were taking, some T-shirts, towels, Rita’s purse, our camera & cell phone all of course in plastic bags, just in case.  Well it was not just in case as what happened next was a comedy of errors.  I went back in and walked Rita out to the dingy all the while she’s having a frightful time as the waves were big and we had to walk out past the last breaker.  It was pretty rough and I finally managed to get her over the the boat and Jim pulled her aboard, so far so good.  I then pulled my self in and Jim got the motor in gear and off we went toward the sailboat.  The waves as I said were pretty big and we hit a few head on and soon the small dingy was full of water, and it sure didn’t look good.  One bigger wave and that was it, over we went.  Dingy capsized and we’re all in the sea.  Luggage and Crocs floating about.  Rita managed to get hold of the boat and I went swimming for some of the stuff but I soon realized it was better I stay with Rita as she was not having a good time of it by now.  Jim swam back to the sailboat to get a rope to tow us over.  Meanwhile I look over on shore and there is a massive effort of folks mounting a campaign to come save us !  Nice to have concerned friends !  Well, two Mexican fellows who had been using our canoe got the canoe and came for us.  BUT, just one problem, the night before I had seen that the drain plug was ripped off and I had spent the morning drying it out and gluing it back in place with GOOP.  I had removed the seats and hid the paddles so they would not use the canoe until the glue had dried.  Well, they found the paddles, under the van and were coming without the seats.  The canoe in the water and it sure looked like the glue was holding.  They eventually managed to get out to us and get Rita and what stiff I had managed to rescue and off they went back to shore.  Then the rest of the gang which had come out with Kayaks and swimming, then towed and pushed the dingy back to shore.  We got it upright and empty.  Whoa what a trip !  I then took the canoe and went to get Jim.  We came in and survived the situation.  Rita OK, all luggage accounted for, stuff in plastic bags survived the dunking except for the cell phone, outboard motor may be OK, washed off and it started.  All, OK, so now I ferry Jim back out to the sailboat with the canoe and come back and convince Rita to go with me on the canoe.  Success, we get there and have a lovely afternoon of sailing around the La Manzanilla bay.  We learned a lot that afternoon not only about sailing but about putting too many people in a too small a dingy !  A big thanks to Jim & Bliss for taking us on board and it was a great lunch we had on board ancored in Blue Bay.  Some photos below of the sailboat but other photos taken by Bliss will come later.  Our camera survived the dunking but the cell phone died and we had to go into Melaque to get a new Mex cell phone, now with new number, 315-109-4147.

We’re now packing up slowly and getting ready to get off the Beach on Sunday.  We will spend the night up at Mike & Marianne’s then we’re off to Puerto Vallarta with Marianne on Monday morning so she can catch her plane to the USA !  Dental work is about over, I’m off meds and back on beer, last work to be completed Saturday.

More News From La Manzanlla

March 19th, 2009

Folks, I have sure been lazy about writing.  Way too much to do around here sorry.  There really has not been much too exciting to write about either, just the hum drum life of sitting around on the beach.  a couple weeks ago there was some action over at the El Tamarindo resort across the bay.  Google El Tamarindo if your not familiar with this place.  The Presidents and their wives of France, Italy and Mexico were over there spending taxpayers dollars.  Helicopters, plane fly by’s. big yachts, the Mexican army with gun boats in the bay, quite the spectacle watching from our side of the bay !  On our way back from an afternoon in Tenacatita we were help up by an overturned propane truck which was blocking the entire two lanes of the Mex 200 just up the hill from the cut of to Boca de Iguana.  I’m talking a big 40 foot tanker here.  Finally a road through thee bush was made to get small cars through and around the tank.  Big trucks and buses were there for several hours before they got the tank empty and drug off the road .  YIKES.  Looked like the driver came into the corner too fast and put it sideways then flipped it !  Mexican driving at it’s best !  We finally met up with Jim Cochoran from up in San Carlos who had offered a sailboat ride earlier.  He and his wife Bliss, same name as the boat, and two dogs, Chica and Sofie showed up at our camp in their Westy.  The boat is now in Barra and we may get a ride this week some time.  Mike & I went out on a fishing tour yesterday with two other of his friends, Patrick and Herb.  Herb was the only lucky guy catching the one and only fish a small tuna, photo below.  I got sea sick and was hoping the chum would attract the fish, no such luck.  We came ashore, bought more fish and Marianne, Rita and some others made a fine diner for us all !  Today Rita & I have a dentist appointment at 1:20 then we’re off to Melaque to see the St. Patricks Day Festivities.

OK, that did not get published as planned.  Dentist appointment got moved to yesterday.  We went to Walts, palapa for spaghetti instead to celebrate his departure.  The after everyone else coped out of going to Melaque only Walt and I went.  We met up with Jean there later too.  What a show.  The biggest castillion ever we were told.  The Mexicans do know how to celebrate.  Shooting fireworks off into a crowd of people gets my attention.  I’ve up loaded a bunch of photos on my Picasa site >
 http://picasaweb.google.ca/FCondelli/SanPatricioMelaqueMXStPatricksDayCelebrations#
This will give you some feeling but really you had to be there !  After the castillion went up in blazes they lit up four wooden bulls loaded with fireworks that some young man then ran through the crowd with.  As the fireworks went off people were running everywhere.  Walt & I hid out behind some tables but still got shot at !  No photos of this as that was pretty much impossible to do !

So, as for the dentist, Rita & I are both having work done by Juan Carlos and his lovely wife Ericka.  Lucky Rita as her appointment is Friday with only a cleaning and a filling.  Me, I’m having four bridges, two root canals and seventeen crowns plus clean up of what’s left.  Seven hours yesterday and three this morning.  My mouth is sore and I’m not allowed any alcohol !  This better be all worth it !

One more small story.  There is a lot for sale next to our camp.  We went and checked it out.  Photos are here >  http://picasaweb.google.ca/FCondelli/LotForSale#
Asking is $249,000 USD down from $299,000.  Everyone we’ve spoke with said it’s not worth more than $100,000.  I may make an offer.  Anyone want in if i get it ?

News from La Manzanilla

March 7th, 2009

Folks, it’s been one week now since planting ourselves on the Playa La Manzanilla and it sure has been great to be back in this wondrous location. Of all the places we have been in Mexico we like it here the best. The beach is still so nice for walks, swimming, biking and full of activity. The grackles still fly north up the beach at sunset and down the beach southward in early morning. We see the occasional whale and porpoise.  Fish are always jumping although I have yet to figure out how to catch one using what I have at hand. Still a short pleasant walk to town, shopping, Internet at Jolandas, and music shows. Our friends from Quebec, Jean-Luc and Angele are still here with us and it’s great to have their company. They were only going to stay for a day or two but not it’s turning into a week and they are getting set up to stay longer. Just as this place did to us all last year it’s doing the same to them. Party at Ann & Sally’s, friends of M & M,  had some good times and crazy costumes that Marianne brought along !  We all took the bus into Melaque on Tuesday to meet up with Jean and Richard & Terry, Jean met us at the bus stop and we made plans to meet for lunch after we did some errands. Somehow we got the restaurant location mixed and we never did meet up. We hiked over the south end of Obregon to Jean’s apartment, he was not there then on to where Richard & Terry’s van was camped on the end of the beach. No one there either and after waiting awhile decided to head back. We met Richard & Terry not long after and all went back to their camp to spend the afternoon. Never did see Jean again ?? A couple days later Richard & Terry came and camped with us for a day so that I could do some work on the van then they headed slowly North, we may stop is BC to see them on our way home. Meanwhile life here on the beach is good, off to Yolandas now and then for Internet and a beer. Spoke with Hans, he’s back home, spoke with Ben, he and Sylive are back from Florida, Ernst, Peter & Jonathan are still in Myrtle Beach, freezing ! We went out for diner at Raymond’s new restaurant , the Mayahuel, it was good food and live musis to boot. Market day, Friday, we met up with Lilo and got a pic of him with one of his pieces of art.  Yesterday we had a beach party here, Mike brought his blender and it worked off the inverter. Solar powered Margaritas were enjoyed by all, Mike & Marianne, Walt, Sally, Ann, Frank & Rita and Hunter & Baracho !!!! Then we all went off for pizza in town and more Margaritas. All survived and most went to Yoga class this morning EXCEPT Mike and I. I’m here typing and testing hammoks today !

Departure Delayed

March 4th, 2009

Frank,

We did not make our departure from the US as planned. My son had delays and is still in the process of moving from Mexico City to Leon. My work schedule is such that this causes a one month postponement, so we won’t leave until 03/27. This will put us in the Manzanillo area on the second week of April. This is quite a delay and it is likely that everyone will be gone by the time we arrive. I hope not…….

Miguel

Back in La Manzanilla

February 26th, 2009
Back in La Manzanilla after leaving here last March is a wonderful experience.  Seeing all our old friends, Mike & Marianne, Leon & Jolanda, Raymond, Katriana, Walt and many, many more.  seeing all the improvements, Crocodile and Porpoise monument at the entrance to L a Manzanilla at the Mex 200, Raymonds restaurant finished and operating, looks great and food is wonderful, the main street is ALMOST fully paved, jut the area around the Jardin needs finishing, AND the made a road around the croc pond so no need to drive all the way around by Boca de Iguanas !!!!!   They just dumped a few loads of gravel and made a road around the end of the crocs !   EASY !  But the crocs do come out on the road so you gotta watch your tires !!!   We spent the first three days here up at Mike & Marianne’s in their spare room.  The got there place back together after the robbery so they’re looking good and happy with their new 10 week old doggy, Baracho.  Yesterday we found a great spot on the beach to park our camper for the month of March.  It’s just up from the spot we had last year, just before the cemetery.  We have running water, flush toilets, showers but no electricity, but that’s fine as our solar set up is working just fine with the new battery.  Just as we were setting up our friends from Quebec, Jean-Luc and Angele Martineau show up and move in next to us.  They are the folks that make the new Westy screens and Rainflys I am selling.  How bizarre is that !  So we are all have a great time.  Mike & Marianne came down late yesterday and we were all out for a short swim with our beers in hand.  I had the canoe out fishing this morning, and yes, still no fish !   We have made contact with Jean and Richard & Terry who are camped out in Melaque and we should meet up with them next week sometime.  I got a message today from Jim Cochran who lives up north of Mazatlan and who had offered us a ride on his sailboat.  He’s on his way down now from Puerta Vallarta and should arrive here early next week.  We passed each other on the road Monday when we went into Melaque to get our propane tanks filled.  He was headed North to Boca de Iguanas with his white Westy looking for a campsite.  How bizarre was that.  Anyways, we should hook up with him sometime next week and go for a sail on sea !  While out for propane we stopped to get the van washed at the new VIP car wash in Jaluco just before Melaque at the turn off for Barra Navidad.  It’s pretty far out as far a car washes go.  Modern and equipped with all the latest gadgets and a bar resturant up and a louge up and down with great white leather lounge chairs and couches – far out and the car wash was only 60 Pesos !!!!   They did a great job of getting all the road dirt off since Bacalar !

So, as for the trip up from the south.  It was good.  After leaving Mark & Pat in La Palma de Sola we stopped in La Ticla looking for Jason.  We did not see his van anywhere after driving up and down all the beach roads  so we left and headed for Manzanillo and shopping then went on ahead to la Manz and that’s why we got up here before we thought we would.  Jason if you read this your welcome to stop by, no waves here for surfing but the beer and view is good !

Michoacan Coast

February 24th, 2009

Folks, Friday morning we packed up and bid Playa Linda Trailer Park farewell and headed for the Michoacan coast.  Our first stop was in Lazaro Cardenas for shopping at the Sorianas.  Our find of the day was a camera for 117 pesos, just under a $100 so that’s what we’ve been looking for.  A Samsung 6 MP running ordinary AA batteries and a SD card slot, Great !  So now we`re back in the photography business.  Passing Playa Azul we head up the coast looking for a nice spot for the night.  Along the way a truck throws up a rock and cracks the windshield on Rita’s side.  We find our camp for the night at Las Penas, a palapa restaurant where we are on the beach and have a great Red Snapper fillet diner as the sun sets.  A good nights sleep despite the donkey and a couple of dogs trying to get Hunter to come out and play.  Pack up again and head for Maruata stopping briefly in Nexpa to check out the scene.  Looks good and there’s plenty of cabanas to rent and camping but nothing close to the playa.  By noon we’re in Maruata and check out all the available campsites and we don’t like any of them,  None are close to the playa and none close to a palapa for shadeand the hammock.  A quick lunch by the turtle hatchery and we’re off again to El Faro.  We cruise around all the beach roads and find nothing to our liking and decide to head for La Ticla and see if we can find Jason.  Just as we’re heading out we spy another beach road and off we go to investigate La Palma de Sola.  We find a pretty little beach just north of where we stayed last year with Mike & Marianne and Jonathan at La Manzanillera.  So at this beach we spy another Westy, brown with Colorado plates, the woman comes out saying is that you Frank ?  Turns out to be Mark and Pat from Zacatecas.  We’ll you never know who your gonna find on the playas of Mexico !  So here we are camped out with Mark and Pat for a day or two then we’re off to La Ticla to see if we can find Jason, then off to Manzanillo for shopping and La Manzanilla to find a spot on the beach for the month of March.   Turtles hatched on our beach last night and one of them made its way into our camper while we were playing Canasta,  see the photo below !

La Manzanilla

February 23rd, 2009

Folks, we are now in La Manzanilla staying at Mike & Mariann’s for the moment until we find a spot of our own.  We got in here late yesterday.  More of the story since Ixtapa later when we get settled and have more time to write.

Adios,
