Los Pinos

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

After much searching I finally found the beach I was looking for !!! Pretty we’ll all the beach access from Cancun south to Playa Del Carmen has been bought up by mega resorts. Sofie and I searched every side road we could find heading to the beach and all most all of them are blocked off with guarded gates. We went down one road and ended up at the Tides resort being built, I drove i and said I was just going to turn around but noticed a road that seemed to continue on around the construction. At the end of this road is Los Pinos the last small hotel on the beach at Punta Beta. The place is wonderful but I’m sure it won’t be there too much longer. Mike is running the place and we’re making arrangements to head up there around Dec 27 when Trav is heading home, there is really no camping there but they are going to work something out for us. 10 $ a night with electricity and showers . The rooms are 50$ or the main floor and 60 $ upstairs. Nice clean, hot water and air . Sofie and I will probly  get a room or a few days while Kaily camps under the palm trees. It’s only 10 min N of Plays Del Carmen and an hour from Tulum.

We’ll stay there on the beach until Sofie goes home and Kaily and I will start the journey home.

There are many more adventures to be had before w think about going home. Trav and aily are going to head out some where for a few day to try and catch some waves. Sofie and I are going to relax and do some exploring around Bacalar. We’re going to take a cab into Chetumal and learn more about the Myan history before we see too many more ruins.

Cancun

Monday, December 15th, 2008

I left Bacalar at 7:30 to drive to the airport and pick up Sofie . It was really foggy for quite a few miles then things cleared up and the drive was pretty easy. The roads are all good and it looks like it will be fourb lane all the way down within a couple of years. Stopped in Tulum to get gas then straight to Cancun. I keep looking for some beach access but it seems to be wall to wall Mega resorts all the way up, some of the smaller beaches I was hoping to stay at seem to be gone, I’ll llok more on the way back down and keep everyone informed.

I went straight to the hotel and took the shuttle to the airport so I wouldn’t have the hassle of parking. Sofies flight was on time, so back to the hotel. Before dinner we took a drive through the hotel zone in Cancun. I’m not sure how people say they have been to Mexico when they spend two weeks in Cancun it looks more like Miami or Vegas than Mexico. We had a nice dinner then an eary night.

Tomorrow we are meeting a friend David Abramsky at Senore Froggs in Playa Del Carmen.then heading back to Bacalar

Travel details to Bacalar and news from here

Sunday, December 14th, 2008

Folks, just a bit of catch up and back tracking to fill you in on what had no time to write about before.  Now in Bacalar we are decompressing from the arduous two weeks on the road trying to catch up to Jerry.  As i said previously the road from the boarder to Manuale was good and mostly uneventfiul except the Jean parting company with us and heading to Puerto Vallarta.  On the advice of Jean we took the road from Emanuel southwest to Lazaro Cardenas, Panuco, Temporal de Sanchez, Tantoyuca, Tepetzintla, Tempache, Estero Del Idolo, and ending up in Pazo Rica for the night.  That way is no good.  Most of the road has been washed away due to heavy rains and gong that way is very bad going.  Better to go straight throug Tampico instead accoring to most oter we spoke with.  STAY on the MEX 180 and do not take any of the perficos around Tampico.  Obey the laws and you will be fine in Tampico regardless of all the hipe about the police there being on a rampage to collect money from the tourists.  BS !  OK, so after a noisy night in Pazo because of a wedding party next to us, we left for El Tajin to see the Mayan ruins there.  When coming down the road to El Tajin do not go into the village but stay in the main road until you get to the entrance to the rui ns site which is well marked.  We spent the better part of Sunday there as there were the pole dancers, a large market and restaurants besides the ruins.

These ruins were the most impressive we have see and a recommended place to visit.  You can camp on the site if you wish to stay over, we did not but went on to the Emerald Coast and found a spot on the beach at Hotel Torre Molino which was a bit over priced.  Check around as there are many camp grounds in this area.  We took the first one we came to as we were tired, bad idea !  We did meet some nice folks though from Ottawa and Quebec travelling with 5th wheelers.  It was their first time in Mexico and they were having a good time.  So outa there on the Monday morning and we found our way around Vereacruz without much problems, then over to Villahermosa for some shopping at the Wal Mart then through the town getting stopped TWICE by the Police for Rita not having her seat belt on which they eventually saw that she DID and they told to keep moving.  We then ended up in Oluta at Pemex 9092 on the Cuota for the night.  It was quiet there for change.  Tuesday morning we were back on the road and wound up in Escarcega at a Pemex for the night.  It was another noisy night as it was a huge truck stop.  But,we did have a good fried chicken diner across the road though.  Not much excitement on this leg of our journey but we did see many Guadalupe runners on the road.  Wednesday morning we left and made our way across the peninsula to Bacalar getting in around noon.  The road across is mostly good four lane with some two lane parts being redeveloped into four lane.  Eventually it will be a good straight drive across.  All in all it’s a long haul and we highly recommend you take more time than we did.  There are many things to see and do along the way but were in a press to catch up to Jerry which was never to happen.  OH, well, we’re here now and all together and all’s fine.  Just to mention that after leaving Tampico you can take the MEX 180 and in some places the 180 D which is the Cuota.  Some places you have no choice some you do.  If your in a hurry and don’t mind the extra expense take the Cuota whenever possible.  Otherwise take the Libre whenever possible.  Both are fairly good roads but the Libre will have more villages and Topes !

Jean, your friend Denis with the yellow Desiel Vanagon Westy who was suppose to travel with you is here camped with us now.  He got here on Thurdsay.  I spoke to him a lot about going to Tekal.  He’s off that direction soon.

Jonathan, Internet here is not as good a situation as it was in La Manz.  There are two Internet places, open at 9 one closes at 10 the other at 11.  No bars like in La Manz.  I found one free WiFi spot out on the main highway near a bank and a Pemex.   All are FAR from the campground.  Tony say there is afree wWiFi spot down the road between the camp and his palce but i have not been able to find it yet.  It’s the most promising as it is close by if it works.  It could be reachable form the camsite with my new antenna that yo have !

Yesterday, Saturday, I took my canoe with it’s new eclectic motor and cruised the 1/2 hour ride down the Laguna to Tony’s and spent the better part of the day working on his van which was incapacitated due to many problems incurred while it was in supposed storage while he was away.  Eventually we got them sorted out and it’s now running and he and Eilene have transportation again.  The fuel tank is leaking badly so we cannot put much fuel in it but he has a new one so we do have another project on the horizon.  So much for my vacation from Vanagon work !  My canoe is still at Tony’s so today I will have to go get it and ride it back down the Laguna  to our campsite !  Jerry just left for Cancun to pick up Sofie.  They will spend a few days ALONE before coming back here with us.  Wednesday, it’s our turn to go to Cancun to pick our friends Bernard and Elena coming in from Toronto.  So, no lack of action here !

Cenote Auzal

Saturday, December 13th, 2008

Another nice day in Bacalar we all went over to Cenote Auzal for lunch and a swim. The Cenote is 90 M deep and really warm they are formed when the limestone falls in and the hole fills with water, this is where most the water comes from down here. After lunch Kaily ,Kerrie and Travis jumped off the roof of the resturant into the Cenote

http://picasaweb.google.com/jlbaldwin52/CenoteAzual#

After a few drinks at the camp I drove everone into town to meet everyone for dinner. More drinks and good food then back to the camp. Ask Frank about the spoonful of green hot sauce.

I’m driving to Cancun tomorrow to pick up Sofie and we’ll spend a day or two in hotels, I think Sofie will appreciate me having a hot shower . Travis and Kerrie left today to head for Cancun and catch Kerrie’s flight home tomorrow night. Next week Kaily and Travis will head for the coast in the rental car to try and do some surfing

Thats it for now

Kohunlich

Thursday, December 11th, 2008

Thurs Dec 11
Yesterday Frank and Rita showed up after a rough trip down, I think it’s going to take them both a few ays to recover. we left them at the camp site and went to see the ruins at Kohunlich about an hour away from Bacalar. If you can get down here to see some of these places it’s really worth it . The Mayans had an amazing civilization here dating back to 200 AD . They had a system of stone roads that ran right across the county and joined their cities from coast to coast. when you see he remains of one of one of these cities you can visualize what it must have been like when there were 1000 of people living there.
when we got back to camp around 5:00 Frank and Rita were all set up, so we headed in to meet Tony and Elana for dinner. Another great meal !!! Then back to camp and to bed.

Today was a day to work on the van Frank brought the parts I needed to repair my exhaust. After a few hours fighting with a bent stud I got it finished and didn’t break anything. I also foundout you can use a tie down strap to remove a oil filter if you don’t have a filter wrench. Going to relax the rest of the day. Meeting Tony and Elana for dinner

Bacalar

Folks, just a quick note to let everyone know we arrived here in Bacalar today around noon.  All is well and we have only a few minor repair issues to look after before we set of to Cancun to pick up our friends, Bernard & Elena, flying in from Toronto next Wednesday.  We have met up with Jerry and his gang and Tony and Eileen.  We’re getting our camp set up where Jerry has found a nice spot on the laguna not far from Tony’s place.  We’re all going out for diner this evening to exchange road stories.  Ours are long and involved and no time to write about it now.  I can only say it’s a long hard road to Bacalar and we are sure glad to stop moving for awhile.  It’s windy, cloudy and warm so all is good.  You did not hear from us since Pazo Rica as we could not find any Internet access without doing some complicated manoeuvres so we just kept on moving down the road to Bacalar.  Hopefully I have a connection this evening to post this !

Tues Dec 9

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008

Tues Dec 9 Rain this morning around 7:00 Travis and Kerrie showed up last night around 8:30 so we were up pat our usual 9:00 pm bedtime getting them set up, they had a great time snorkeling at some cenotes on the trip down from Cancun just off the 307 N of Tulum. After our morning coffee we went down the road to pick up Tony and is wife to go to breakfast. Tried a new restaurant and as usual ate way too much, a full plate of tortillas with re fried beans then eggs then ham, red sauce, cheese and fried plantains and bacon on the side. One plate would have been more than enough for two. 25 pesos (2.50 Canadian ) We took a drive out to see a friend of Tony’s who is building a place further up the lagoon. Just a beautiful location . I’ll post some photos . We ent back to camp and everone spent most of the after noon in the water. Time for a nap now. Frank and Rita still haven’t shown up maybe later today. I work everyone up for dinner and we headed into town to pick up Tony and Elaine. We ate at a hamburger stand in town great cheeseburger and fries for 2.10 Back to camp for an early night. Met a young German couple on their way to Argentina in a vanagon.

Wed 10

It’s a little cloudy today so we’re going to explore some ruins nearby. We’re tryingto rent the grounds of a hotel so we can get away fom the christmas crowds, I’ll let you know how that works out.

We made it and it’s wonderful you should all be here, I’ll post pictures so you all can see where we are. We got here at 11:30 on Sat and found Tony right away also Ben your friend Vito in the Sprinter van is with us at the campground. We rented a car from Tony’s friend for the next 3 weeks so we can drive around and explore without breaking camp. The town is about 2.5 miles from the camp . You really work up an appetite after that walk. Food is great and cheap , I bought breakfast for everyone one day (6) 150 pesos !! The water is crystal clear and about 80 degrees it’s great. It’s a fresh water lagoon so showers are no problem. Kaily and I walked into town to find an internet hookup and do some site seeing. We will be taking a cab back, I don’t want to over do this exercise business. We’ll be around here until the end of Jan then Kaily and I will head home . Travis went to Cancun yesterday to pick up Kerrie , they should be here today or tomorrow. I expect to se Frank and Rita today or tomorrow. I’ll post pictures to our associated site. make sure you check them out.  Bye for now

We are now in Poza Rica, camped out in luxury behind the Poza Rica Inn Hotel.  $20 gets us hot showers, pool, hot tub, electricity, water, Internet and there is a really good restaurant where we just went through the fabulous buffet.  We left Harlingen with Jean and made it across the border at Nuevo Progresso.  Jean brought us that way as it’s a small crossing and we went through with all paper work done in less than one hour.  On the road in Mexico it was the familiar sights but more lush growth.  We drove on southward until we split up with Jean where the Mex 101 toward Victoria meets the Mex 180.  He got a message from his girlfriend back home that she was flying into Puerto Vallarta to meet him as she could not get a cheap flight into Cancun.  So much for the joint venture driving to Bacalar.  Rita, Hunter & I are on our own now.  We pushed on to Manuel where we found a nice spot beside a Pemex to camp for the night.  In the morning we set off to bypass Tampico on the roads Jean had suggested to us.  DO NOT and I MEAN DO NOT go this way.  The road is terrible, full of gigantic pot holes, gravel, dusty, dirty, slow, washed out, collapsed and in some instances IMPASSABLE !  Whew, what a trip and it was S-L-O-W going for a good two hours.  Eventually we got through the mess and ended up in Poza Rica and had a welcome hot shower !  Tomorrow we will visit around the area before pushing on.  There are supposedly spectacular ruins at Tijuin not far south so we will go there.

Visitors in Memphis

Friday, December 5th, 2008

Jean, Frank, Rita and Hunter dropped by Memphis for a few nights on their way south.  We had a nice visit and took a tour around Memphis to run some errands, visit Graceland and eat some Memphis food.  We didn’t time things right for the barbecue restaurants so I guess we’ll have to try again sometime.

Jean missed being in any of the few photos that I took somehow.  I guess that’s what he get for skipping the fabulous Graceland tour.  I think Franks should put some rhinestones on his mechanic jumpsuits..
